Which Route Should You Choose?
Route 1 — Alcácer do Sal + Óbidos + Coimbra + Aveiro
Choose Route 1 if you want:
- A varied journey across Portugal
- Traditional Alentejo scenery
- Medieval towns
- Castles
- Portuguese university history
- Canals and architecture
- A more geographically balanced sightseeing route
Route 1 is the stronger option for travellers visiting Portugal for the first time and wanting to experience several very different parts of the country.
Route 2 — Monsaraz + Évora + Coimbra + Aveiro
Choose Route 2 if you want:
- A deeper Alentejo experience
- Roman heritage
- Medieval villages
- Castles
- Alqueva landscapes
- Historic Portuguese cities
- A substantial full-day road trip
Route 2 is considerably longer and more appropriate when the journey itself is intended to become a major part of the holiday experience.
Which Stops Can Be Combined?
Stops should normally be combined within the selected route.
Route 1 Combinations
Particularly strong combinations include:
Alcácer do Sal + Óbidos
Óbidos + Coimbra
Coimbra + Aveiro
or the complete:
Alcácer do Sal + Óbidos + Coimbra + Aveiro
Route 2 Combinations
Particularly strong combinations include:
Monsaraz + Évora
Évora + Coimbra
Coimbra + Aveiro
or the complete:
Monsaraz + Évora + Coimbra + Aveiro
Can We Mix Route 1 and Route 2?
We normally recommend choosing one route.
The first sections of Route 1 and Route 2 follow very different corridors.
Combining Alcácer do Sal, Óbidos, Monsaraz and Évora in the same journey would create a very long and inefficient itinerary.
A custom route can be discussed before booking if you have a specific destination in mind.
Can We Visit All Four Stops on Route 1?
Yes.
However, the direct Faro Airport to Porto journey is already a long-distance transfer.
Adding four complete sightseeing visits transforms the transfer into a full-day or extended-day journey.
An early arrival at Faro Airport is strongly recommended.
Can We Visit All Four Stops on Route 2?
Yes, provided your arrival time allows.
Route 2 is particularly substantial.
Monsaraz + Évora + Coimbra + Aveiro involves considerably more driving than the direct route and several hours of sightseeing.
For many travellers, selecting two stops provides a better balance.
Which Stops Are the Strongest Combination?
For Route 1:
Óbidos + Coimbra provides an excellent combination of medieval and academic Portugal.
Coimbra + Aveiro is particularly efficient further north.
For Route 2:
Monsaraz + Évora provides the strongest Alentejo experience.
Coimbra + Aveiro then creates a second cultural section before Porto.
What Happens if Our Flight Is Delayed?
A significant delay at Faro Airport may affect the sightseeing itinerary.
Depending on the actual arrival time, it may be necessary to:
- Reduce sightseeing duration
- Remove one or more stops
- Choose only the strongest combination
- Continue directly to Porto
For a journey of this length, available daylight and driver working time also need to be considered.

Faro Airport to Porto is one of our longest Portugal transfers.
